Lesson 05
Critical Transitions
Many connected systems change gradually until a critical point is reached. Beyond that point the behaviour can reorganise into a new stable pattern.
Slowly raise the applied energy on the system below. For a while it stays in its current coherent arrangement. Eventually a threshold is crossed — and the group settles into a different, still-organised state.
Learning objectives
- See that gradual change can reach a threshold.
- Observe reorganisation after a critical point.
- Understand that the new arrangement can itself be stable.
- Recognise this pattern of behaviour in many real systems.
Central indicator shows the mean phase direction. Faint lines indicate coupling between neighbouring nodes.

Live explanation
The system remains stable. Coupling is holding all systems in a shared arrangement.
What to notice
- Small changes often produce small effects.
- Sometimes gradual change reaches a threshold.
- Beyond that threshold the entire system may reorganise.
- The new arrangement can remain stable.
- Many real systems display this type of behaviour.
